God, That's Good!

by janethegreat (01/03/2008 - 15:40)

Over the holiday weekend, I saw a few movies, but Sweeney Todd was definitely my favorite.

Blood, guts, and showtunes! What's not to love???

Based on one of Stephen Sonheim's weirder musicals, Sweeney Todd isn't a staple on the community theatre circuit because it's not exactly kid-friendly. So, I was really excited to see it on the big screen!

Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter don't have booming musical theatre voices, but they hold their own. And, because they don't sound like professional singers, the movie takes on a more real quality that keeps you from being distracted by the singing. And, the acting from both is fantastic!

Tim Burton works his signature style into the movie without hitting you over the head with it.  And, the cartoony quality of the blood and guts keeps the movie from being too disgusting.

Go see it! You'll laugh, you'll cry, and, maybe, you'll throw up in your mouth a little bit. But, it's worth every penny!  ;)

Waitress is sweeter than pie

I just saw the movie "Waitress" on DVD, and it is freaking awesome!

It's not just good in that indie movie way where you feel like you should like it because it's good for you, or it's anti-establishment, or the director was a 21-year-old whiz kid who paid his actors in tales of adventure. It's actually good!

So, make a pie and see it, y'all! ;)

Ben Stiller is just meh

by janethegreat (10/15/2007 - 21:33)

I saw The Heartbreak Kid last weekend and I'm kind of disappointed.

I normally love Ben Stiller, but, in this movie, he isn't likable at all. And, his annoying wife is not hate-able enough. I didn't know who to root for and I didn't know what to laugh at.

Also, I can't stand Ben's dad, Jerry Stiller. I love "The King of Queens," but I want to change the channel every time he's on screen. I find him seriously grating. Ben should ban him from all future movies and stick to teaming with Vince and Owen instead.

One joke does not a movie make...

Being a lover of stupid comedies, I thought Mr. Woodcock would be worthy of a couple chuckles. But, it turns out it's only worthy of one.

I'm a fan of Billy Bob Thornton and Seann William Scott, but, in this case, having three names just wasn't enough.

Imagine if you and your high school buddies got drunk on Pabst in your parents' garage one night. Maybe one of your drunk teenage friends would say, "That gym teacher is such a douche, dude. Imagine if he were bangin' your mom, bro. Man, that would suck." Then, imagine if you and your buddies made that conversation into a movie...

...That's Mr. Woodcock. I just saved you $10.

Deja Doh

I finally got around to seeing The Simsons Movie and it was good...I think.

Honestly, it's mooshed together in my brain with every Simpsons episode I've ever seen, so the details are a little fuzzy.  I'm not saying it's bad. I definitely laughed, but it's like TV...with strangers...and popcorn.

The Simpsons Movie is definitely worth a rental, but there's no reason to see it on the big screen. My boyfriend suggested going to Balls of Fury and, foolishly, I laughed at him. If I had it to do over again, I would have listened.

You Remind Me of the Babe

I've loved fantasy films since David Bowie first snapped on his spandex in Labyrinth. One close-up of that weirdo, slathered in eye shadow and I was hooked. He was so strange, yet so very dreamy.

If you had childhood fantasies about unicorns and men in tights, you will love Stardust. It's creative and funny and showcases some great performances from Michelle Pfeifer and Robert De Niro.

It really makes me wish we lived in a world with fewer Vin Diesel films and more men in make-up.

SuperGood

After years of mediocre teen comedies, Superbad is like a wine cooler at a keg party. It's a little different, a little sickening, but you have admit  that it's also freaking tasty.

Based on the teen years of its writers, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Superbad is hilarious throughout, with plenty of gross-out humor to go around. Jonah Hill does a great job, as does Michael Cera, who will look familiar to fans of the prematurely cancelled TV show, "Arrested Development."

I wouldn't recommend bringing your kids or parents to this flick, but as long as your movie-mates aren't related to you, Superbad is a great way to waste a couple of hours.
